President Donald Trump officially declared Antifa a terrorist organization via Truth Social, calling it a “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster” and pledging legal action against its financiers and operatives.
The move follows the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk by Tyler Robinson, a suspect allegedly influenced by far-left ideology. While no direct Antifa link was confirmed, Republicans blamed left-wing extremism.

The chief executive issued the declaration on Wednesday, Sept. 17, in a post on his Truth Social platform. Trump described Antifa as a “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster,” citing the group’s violent tactics. He also signaled a sweeping legal offensive against its financiers and operatives.

“I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. patriots that I am designating Antifa – a sick, dangerous, radical left disaster – as a major terrorist organization,” Trump wrote. “I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices.”

The decision follows the Sept. 10 fatal shooting of Turning Point USA funder Charlie Kirk during a campus speaking event at Utah Valley University. Authorities identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, a man reportedly influenced by far-left ideology.

Robinson allegedly confessed to the killing in messages to a transgender partner. “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out,” the shooter wrote, according to prosecutors. While no direct link between Robinson and organized Antifa cells has been confirmed, senior Republicans – including Vice President J.D. Vance – have blamed “left-wing extremism” for the attack.

Interestingly, Trump earlier expressed his support toward designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization. “I would do that 100 percent,” he told a reporter during a press conference Monday, Sept. 15, at the White House. He also denounced Antifa as “terrible” during the same briefing. Yet Antifa’s nebulous structure – lacking formal leadership or membership rolls – poses legal and logistical hurdles.

Antifa’s supporters, often aligned with anarchist or communist ideologies, reject electoral politics in favor of “direct action,” – a euphemism critics equate to lawlessness. As legal battles loom, the designation marks a pivotal moment in America’s culture wars – one that could redefine the boundaries between activism and terrorism.
