Russia announced on Thursday, June 1, that it has repelled several more cross-border attacks conducted by Ukrainian “terrorist formations.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense said the attacks happened in and around the town of Shebekino in the Belgorod Oblast (province), less than five miles from the border with Ukraine and 40 miles to the northeast of the major Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Shebekino has been targeted in a series of cross-border attacks since mid-to-late May. The first major incursion saw two days of nearly non-stop firefights and artillery strikes in Belgorod, and the southern portions of the region, the parts of the oblast bordering Ukraine, continue to come under intensified fire.
“Overall, the attack involved up to 70 militants, five tanks, four armored vehicles, seven pickup trucks and a Kamaz [heavy duty] truck,” said the Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday evening as it reported on the attempted crossings.
The ministry added that it used air assets and artillery to repel the attacks and they killed over 50 Ukrainian fighters.
Belgorod Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov accused the Armed Forces of Ukraine of being directly involved, participating by repeatedly targeting Shebekino with artillery.
Gladkov said at least 12 civilians have been wounded in just the past 24 hours, including two in Shebekino who were wounded when a Ukrainian drone dive-bombed a gas station. Hundreds of other Russian civilians have poured into evacuation centers.
“There are many families with children, including infants and disabled people,” said Shebekino Mayor Valentin Demidov. “We will try to provide them with as much care as possible.”
Ukraine denies its military was involved in the incursions and says they are conducted by Russian volunteer fighters.
Hundreds of buildings, mostly civilian housing, were reportedly destroyed during the attacks, which included the use of American-made armored vehicles, drones and even a cyberattack, which really puts into question Ukraine’s denial of involvement.
The recent attacks on Belgorod Oblast were orchestrated by the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), a far-right paramilitary group made up of ethnic Russian emigres that support Ukraine and want to oust Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The second phase promised by the RVC’s commander has begun,” the group announced on its Telegram channel, referring to a previous incursion into Belgorod, alongside images of fighters firing their weapons.
Another majority-Russian, anti-Putin group, the Freedom of Russia Legion, also claimed responsibility for cross-border raids. Like the RVC, the legion is similarly made up of Russian emigres who have similar ultranationalist and fascist leanings.
Denis Kapustin, also known as Denis Nikitin, leader of the RVC, is a fascist with direct ties to neo-Nazis in Germany.
Kapustin helped found the RVC in August 2022 in Ukraine. Its declared goal is the establishment of an “ethnically pure” Russian nation-state, one that does not include the tens of millions of Russian religious minorities like Buddhists and Muslims and members of other non-Russian national and ethnic groups that are considered citizens of the Russian Federation.
The RVC’s logo is derived from the symbols of the Vlasov Army, a group of Russians that collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II.
Kapustin himself is considered “one of the most influential figures” in the European neo-Nazi scene by German authorities, who have banned him from entering the country since 2019 due to his very close ties with neo-Nazis in Germany, including the leaders of the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party.
Most of the members of the RVC are also notorious neo-Nazis with ties to other neo-Nazi groups all over Europe, including Ukraine.
