The president who gave Americans the best advice they have gotten in the modern age came from Dwight D. Eisenhower.
In January 1961, as he prepared to leave office after two terms, “Ike” gave a speech that did not get a lot of attention at the time because the country was excited that the young, dashing John F. Kennedy was about to be inaugurated.
But what Eisenhower said, in retrospect, was as threatening to liberty as it was frightening.
“A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction,” he said. “Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea.”
Ike continued, with a warning: “This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”
Ike, who successfully commanded all American forces during World War II and was responsible for devising and approving D-Day, did not use the term “deep state” but that’s precisely what he was describing: A vast network of unelected bureaucrats answerable only to themselves was already being established 60 years ago.
And today, it has morphed into an entity unto itself, completely independent of Congress and able to dispose of presidents (Kennedy by violence and Donald Trump by manipulating the election process). The entity is also capable of pulling off operations in broad daylight, under our very noses — like the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
Federal investigators have arrested one of their own: Thomas Edward Caldwell, a so-called ‘militia’ leader who they say held a “leadership role” within an organization known as the Oath Keepers.
Fox News reports that federal prosecutors are already falsely characterizing the organization as akin to some domestic terrorist group:
Oath Keepers ? identified in court papers as a “loosely organized collection of militia who believe that the federal government has been coopted (s.i.c.) by a shadowy conspiracy that is trying to strip American citizens of their rights” ? were seen in photographs on Capitol grounds on Jan. 6.
That is completely untrue. A simple read of the group’s website reveals exactly who they are: “Oath Keepers is a non-partisan association of current and formerly serving military, police, and first responders, who pledge to fulfill the oath all military and police take to ‘defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’”
Does that sound like a “militia” group? Does it sound like an organization that recruits mercenaries and militants? No, it doesn’t. In fact, the organization has a careful vetting process. Also, it operates under a set of bylaws and its members often volunteer in their communities during natural disasters. (Related: Capitol protest organizer outed as “prolific” FBI informant.)
But now, suddenly, they’re essentially domestic terrorists? Or maybe this is what the deep state wants us to believe because that way it is easier to demonize the organization and any others like it — even at the expense of a former deep state member like Caldwell.
Fox News also notes:
Among the hundreds who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 were eight to 10 people wearing “paramilitary equipment” and clothing that identified them as members of the Oath Keepers, authorities said. They moved “in an organized and practiced fashion and force[d] their way to the front of the crowd gathered around a door to the U.S. Capitol,” court papers state.
This sounds suspiciously like a set up; again, this organization does not engage in, condone, or plan riots and incursions, period. Read about them yourself.
Ike warned us about the earliest version of the deep state; he was spot on, but even he probably could never imagine what he was describing would turn into an entity that turned against its own people.
